Rassilon1's A.D.O.S Dalek Sec

Day 1

I have had another vision lovers of all thinks Dalek, and it all came to me in a dream. As I was in the passenger seat of the Dalek van on the way home from the Armageddon expo in Melbourne and having a much-deserved beer
and reflecting on the 2 days of Daleking. Just after my 6th beer and falling a sleep it came to me. Visions of all things past, present, and future. A vision that only the creator Davros could have had if he was drinking an Australian beer.

I shall build a Dalek like no other or maybe one other. (Dave Duca Dalek Sec)
A Dalek that will have the D.O.S (Dalek Opening System) like Dalek Caan and shall open in a way that,,,,,that ,,,,,, but at this point I was woken up and the vision was lost.

I believe that the vision will re-appear at some point but only time can tell. Thinking of how Dalek Caan’s D.O.S (Dalek Opening System) was such a big hit and just blown them away, you can see it on here under “Dalek Caan’s opening” I thought to my self.

I would have to come up with something big for next year, so big that, I would by Dalek building standards become a Davros.
Well it’s nice to dream costs nothing and hurts no one, any how have started a new Dalek build to take to Armageddon in 2012.

Have completed the ray gun for this I used the CNC lathe to make the aluminium parts and for the barrel used chrome 1” steel tube with a wall thickness of .9 cut 500mm long, will be making (2) ray guns, as I will be building (2) Daleks with another Dalek builder from Project Dalek he is doing the fibreglass work and I am doing the mechanical mechanism that will drive the D.O.S (Dalek Opening System) for the skirt and shoulders.

Once I have bent the 5mm chrome bars, cut to 270mm long and bent on a 45 deg’s angle each end. I used the lathe the hold it all in place until the 2 part resin glue go’s off, once this has dried I then removed it from the jig (lathe) and placed it in the stand awaiting for the installation into the Dalek

DAY 2 & 3 & 4

The Dalek will incorporate the (Advanced Dalek Opening System) or A.D.O.S for short. More on that later.

Spent the weekend working on the neck section of Dalek Sec, made from 18mm MDF and cut out using a Bosh router, the Dalek will be painted in gloss black with all the metalwork in chrome, to give the Dalek the bling look.

The (8) 20 x 12 pine supports are cut 260 long this will move the dome closer to the top neck ring, giving the Dalek a more of a robust look.

Next will be to install the neck blocks once they have been casted from the mould that my other Dalek build buddy is building, he is doing all the fibreglass work, to cut my work load and time down somewhat.

On the bottom neck ring I have made a 12 x 3mm ledge for the heronrib matting to sit on and also give it a better finish.

Have been a bit slow in doing an update here on the Dalek Sec build, :( but have managed to install the haronrib matting.
Also the lazy Susan bearing showed up some time back and have sat it on the top of the neck to show were it will eventually go.
Next will be to install the neck blocks, once they have been made cast.

Hello From Hamilton, Ontario Canada

Hi Everyone,

My name is Michael, and I'd like to take a quick minute to introduce myself.

Signed up to the forums about a week or so ago, and have been in sheer awe of the great work being done on these forums. The attention to detail, craftsmanship and dedication are amazing.

Being a long time Dr.Who fan (I'm 35 now), I felt it time to start my own Dalek project. I'm torn between the new 2005 series Dalek (Dalek Sek style), or the older classic version. The name escapes me at the moment, but the livery was a gun metal grey/dark coloured version. I think it may have been the 'workhorse' of the Dalek army.

I'm thinking perhaps the 'classic' version might be a 'little' easier to start with. This is of course, my first build.

Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated.

But again, thank you for letting me join, and I hope to make progress soon.

Regards,

Michael

Jim's (Possibly) Hybrid Nsd

Having just picked up my first load of parts, I guess it's time to start a build diary. We'll see how many months pass until my next post.

My as-yet unnamed Dalek will probably be a cross between a 60's Dalek and an NSD. (Yeah, crazy, I know.) I don't care for all of the NSD details, but I really like some of them. So as of now, I plan on a few mix-and-match parts to give me what I want. Of course, the mods need to add a post icon for this kind of Dalek. ;) Maybe Attached Image: hybrid.jpg. Or Attached Image: wtf.gif

That said, don't be surprised if it turns into a straight NSD.

-Jim

cdngoose's Dalek Dreadnaught

Hi there!
My name is Mark and im building a dalek with my son Jarod ( Hey There :) )( Jarod will be doing most of the progress report for you all)
The Dalek we are building is a Mechmaster Mk 6 with a slight change lol.
We Are useing a Jazzy Power wheelchair and alot of aluminum XD
We started in January with the official build but we have been gathering information for the better part of a year and are hopeing to be done by August.
We are in kitcheneir Ontario.
A thanks goes out to slaughterbox whos letting us check out his Dalek on Sunday! Also to MEchmaster for all his help so far and for likely countless more. Also a note of AWE and a bow to Alan for his work on STORM. For it is Alan who has prompted us into action.

We started this project the old fashon way, we got the plans for Mechmasters MK6 and some lightweight wood.

Yesterday I went to Hamilton to pick up this wheelchair my son had found on the local buy and sell list. It turned out to be a gem. The batteries were low on water but once filled they took a charge. The seat goes up and down and JArod spent quite awhile driving around the Hanger at the Airport, He wanted to drive down the Taxi ways but there was too much snow on the ground. The best part is I got this chair for $250.00 I consider this a great deal.

Acrylikhan's NSD Supreme

It's begun. The research stage is slowly giving way to more practical work. It was very hard choosing which Dalek to create. I most vividly remember the 70's from Genesis of the Daleks - probably my favorite episode of teh original series. But the new series Dalek had shown an evolution that was very appealing! So much interesting details to get lost in. It was definitely the right choice.

With that, I am going to step out of my safe zone with color. I tend to favor black, gray, and darker colors. With this brilliant bronze, it should be a good challenge and really test if my model making skills are as good as I think they are.

Where to begin? If there is one thing I have learned about myself, I never truly stay focused on one aspect and completely finish it. I drift around, focusing on either getting materials together, starting construction and pattern finishing, or mold making. If I feel like working on the lathe, I look for all the parts that need lathe work and get a list together.

My starting point this time is at the top - THE DALEK DOME! This will be the most difficult part to produce. I will see if I can machine the master out of RenShape on either a CNC Mill or CNC router. If you don't know what RenShape is, its an engineered material that is made of urethane powder mixed with another urethane resin. Depending on the chemical composition, you can get very soft, easy to sculpt material, or an extremely dense plastic that can be used for metal casting. Ren 360 is sort of in the middle ground and excellent for master making. I'm sort of tired out from creating forms out of scrap wood and bondo, and making a precise template. I've done so many for costuming work, and I thought, having it machined to exact tolerance would enhance that heavy industrial feel.

I started plugging in the data into a CAD program. Here's what I've done today:

Attached Image: dalek1.jpg Attached Image: dalek2.jpg Attached Image: dalek3.jpg

I never thought I would have to use arc radians to figure out where to place the cut outs for the lights and the eye stalk. I still have to get all of the plate grooves on this model. I am considering having the cowl built in with the dome to save a step. I have a friend that has been fiberglassing for over twenty years, and he's agreed to help me out with the dome and any other parts I might need. I still need to look over how the eye stalk is attached before I make a final decision. Keeping the details crisp is very easy. If something gets rounded off in the process, body filler works wonders. The mold would be slight more complex, but it is extremely possible.

Research has pointed me to the MoFlash 50022RS Clear lens for the dome lens. I think I best order a few of these up. If I get those, I can start on the cages and then start working on methods to secure them to the dome. I hope the holes I put into the CAD file aren't too big!

So much more to study and the gathering of materials.... more to come. The eye stalk cowl and constructing the cages probably will be the next step.

Ferrain's Dalek - Gene(Sis) Hunt

OK here we go, taking the plunge with my very first Dalek build.

Gene Hunt as it's a MKIII Travel machine from GotD (whoever said MKIII Cortina can stop sniggering at the back).

Eyeball parts have been bought years ago in advance of this build (£3), hemispheres donated from my old local pub & transported all the way from UK to Canada.

Seat Ikea clearance yesterday (50c), potential eyestalk ($1.50), lazy susan for dome rotation ($9).

Starting with making the former for the neck rings, in the same style as the dome itself, simple starting point..

Clipboard for the plywood ($1.25) former, making the rings from fibreglass, chunk of MDF worktop ($4.90), indicator lights to be robbed from THO's "bath lights".

Day 1 - Can't upload pic's (bugger).

Created neck ring former, discovered that I got the OSD for the largest neck ring correct, not so for the ISD, made a new one in moments using the original as a template. Discovered I didn't have to go to work today, much to THO's annoyance & will have to get the plaster to make the first neck ring plug (is that the correct term used on the steps to making a mould) on another day.

Test tracing with pencil on the (fractionally smaller than the OSD) mdf surface seems to work out thus far.

Lots of questions from kids (who think it's going to be built in a day & had to explain that sometimes you have to create things to make other things) & THO (who think's I am mad).

Lingarn's Nsd

Greetings!

I've taken the plunge, collected materials, and am going to start building today. I live in an apartment, so I'm still not entirely clear on how I'll work the fiberglassing steps, but it'll be fun figuring it out. :D

So far, I've ordered the hemispheres from This and That 4 You, and a pair of moflash lenses should be on their way from Farnell. I'm thinking I'll order the plastic pieces for the eye and plunger when I get a little further in. Today I picked up some MDF and hardboard. I'm going to start measuring and cutting the skirt pieces this afternoon.

I know it is going to be a long road ahead, but I think it is going to be a lot of fun.

I'll post again when I have something more substantial to take pictures of. ;)

Wish me luck!

Lingarn

Hello From Lutz, Florida

Lutz, FL? Where is that? Just north of Tampa where I grew up. I just discovered this site - it's great! I plan to build 2 bots: a Dalek (of course) and K9. I made a donation but cannot seems to find where/how to order the Workshop Manual. Have not decided whether to build a scale or full size Dalek. The full size would be way cool but don't know where I would store it. Plan to start with the K9 build out of styrene (k9.replicarobots.net). Most of my bots are made with Aluminum, steel, Ti, and carbon fiber. With the economy the styrene build should be easier on the budget. Has anyone built a full size Dalek out of styrene?

Djohn's NSD

I started my build in october 2011 and am progressing nicely but now getting a bit to cold to be in the workshop..i must say this site is a goldmine of ideas and has been a lot of help..i started with the fender and base and moved on to the sholder section which seemed to take forever..here are a few pics so far..more pics and updates to follow
