5Dmc1's Dalek

Morning ladies and gents! Getting started on my Dalek today and I found some old parts from a fan that will make an exquisite plunger! Along with a possible motorization for the dome.

Its ok if these don't work out, I just wanted to get something up and going because I feel its time to begin.

Anyways, here are some pics, crude, but simple, the plunger is just sitting there, I havent glued anything yet.

2Nd Movie Pale Gold Saucer Dalek

This is GASP my 6th Dalek, and its going to be as the title above says A version of the 2nd movie gold Dalek,

I recently built TWO Dalek bodies from scrap MDF and hardboard, In fact I built them both in April just gone, One was completed, The Supreme and the other looks kind of half finished and a bit rough at the moment but it's about to be turned into a work of art Now there's a local paint sprayers round the corner who do some really good work, They've always got Lotus Porche and Rollers in to do work so I popped in and asked if they fancy doing me something different, I showed em all Much to their amusement, my little Product Enterprise three inch version and asked if they could spray me the gold parts,

They all had a good laugh and said it would be no problem also it wouldn't cost much, ( Will let you know the price etc) But it's certain to look flippin brilliant anyway! Yesterday I started on the annoying P I T A fiddly bits and as usual I always try to make the Dalek spending NO MONEY whatsoever http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif Try it! You'll save a fortune relying on your wits and resourcefulness alone, So I used my hole cutter to make three little discs and hacksawed a big nail up to use as a dome turning wheels,

I also got some wooden dowl Band Q do a pack of 6mm thick X 90cms long dowl, 2 in a pack for only 48p so I bought four as that will be well enough to do 8 neck uprights, snap each dowl into three bits slap on a liberal dollop of PVA and sit em on a flat surface covered with clingfilm for a few hours, Then they were solid as a rock and hadn't stuck to the clingfilm covered table top, I'll trim em to size later, By the way I dont want to spend more than two or three weeks on the build as I'm back to work then I have also discovered to my horror, I am 33 hemis short too AAaaagh http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif

This may slow me up Curse that novelty capsule company closing down!, Oh Yesterday I prepped an old metal pipe I'm gonna use as my eyestalk Sanded it to shineyness and waxed it against rust with an old bit of clear shoe polish, made my 5 eye discs from 3mm MDF spun on a drill and made the Eye pivot, again from bits of scrap lying around, Loads done, Lots of un-glamourous dull but neccessary jobs, Boring but essential, as the song goes,... and I didn't spend a dog-gone dime http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

Captain Cubbio's Nsd

Hello there,

Here we go another newish member here having a go at making a New Series Dalek from 2005 to 2009. This is my first post we started about three weeks ago we ordered the MDF locally at a DIY Place here in Hinckley, Leicestershire. My dad's got quite a lot of tools, So we put up a tent to make sure our project goes ahead & possible we might move into our Garage in the Winter Months ahead of us.

My uncle knows a lot about GRP & Fibreglass he used to work for a couple of companies in Burbage, Leicestershire that delt with Fibreglass & GRP stuff.

Here's some photo's as we go along our progress & I hope people will help us out with materials on here.

Kind Regards

Ssorguk's Pair Of 70's Daleks

Those of you who have come across my ongoing NSD build diary will already be aware that I am building a total of three Daleks - one NSD, and two classic models from Genesis of the Daleks and Death to the Daleks. For those of you for whom this is news, here's the story.

Originally I planned to build only the Genesis model - that was around seven years ago. I started acquiring a number of items, only for my wife to throw a massive wobbly. She thought any visitors would regard the presence of a Dalek in our hall as a clear sign of insanity and no matter how much I tried to persuade her it would only make a very positive impression, she wouldn't listen (as usual). Now that I'm divorced, I'm replacing her with a Dalek army.

Of course, in the meanwhile the new series has arrived and with it two new Dalek variants. I was so taken with the NSD (I won't even try to put my thoughts on the 2010 redesign into words as most of it would have to be asterisked out) that I decided I wanted one of those as well. For complicated reasons, it wasn't long before the dual build soon mutated into a triple. Talk about making up for lost time!

So here begin the story of my classic builds. Details of my NSD build appear elsewhere.

Here are a few of the items I acquired all those years ago:

The skirt has been cast from moulds taken off an original. It has been made in two halves and then fibreglassed together.

The dome is one of a pair.

The hemispheres are injection mouldings.

The dome lights came via eBay and are the real McCoy Wipac Land Rover sidelight lenses that were used in the Seventies by the BBC. A second set has been very recently acquired.

So far, so good... Or so I thought.

The skirt bottom lacks a flange to attach it to be fender base and is trimmed unevenly. Worst of all, there are several large areas of filler where air bubbles were clearly trapped during the lay-up. This wouldn't normally be an issue but because the fibreglass around the bubble is very smooth, the filler has become detached in several places. The fibreglass should have been abraded before filling. I'm therefore expecting a few more lumps of filler to drop off.

The shoulders look good and are a good fit to the top of the skirt. Unfortunately, the height isn't what the plans suggest it should be.

The dome is very nicely made but the wrong shape! It's too wide and not tall enough.

So where I thought one of the builds was well advanced, it turns out it's going to be largely back to the drawing board. I'm hoping that I can salvage the skirt but as I need to have a pair, I do wonder if it might not be easier to simply cast two new ones that will match each other and be more symmetrical than this one that's moulded from an original.

Thank God I know the hemis and dome lights are right!

I also acquired this recently:

It's a WWII mortar shell (minus the explosive head!) The tail fin section was used by the BBC for the front end of the projectile weapon the Daleks sported in Death to the Daleks.

So that's the state of play at the moment. More news soon.

Cardboard Full Size Dalek

I am building a cardboard dalek. I've gotten pretty far already. This is the eye. This is the body so far. I had to stop because we ran out of supplies for construction.http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.gif

Dex-Jay's 1970's Dalek

Hi all!

Thought I might as well start a diary before heading back over the garage!
Here's pics of the progress so far...

I decided to use pieces of quadrant to help alight the uprights for the skirt....

Here's another 2 pics of the glued upper and lower support sections of the skirt..

The pieces of quadrant are also chamfered to meet the skirts...

Just waiting on the hole saw now and me to make my mind up how I'm going to form the hemis!

Panic's Nsd

So I've started working on my NSD finally.

Purchased some Christmas ornament style Hemis from De Serres last week here in Edmonton. Bought a table saw yesterday from my wife's coworker.

I've been carefully breaking off and sanding down some of the plastic loops and edges from the Hemis.

I was inspired by AmericanDave's shop bot stuff and thought I'd to try to create some of the small flat detail parts using Ponoko.com's Laser cut MDF/acrylic. I am in the process of ordering the laser cut inserts for my Hemis. These will be glued into place so a bolt can be used to attach them to the skirt. I'm also ordering the details for the light cages and Gun boxes today. The neck rings and blocks as well as oil seals will hopefully be ordered from Ponoko as well.

If I had any 3D design knowhow I'd likely try Shapeways.com for some smaller parts too.

As long as it's okay with the rest of the forum I'll give free access to my Ponoko files once I've confirmed their quality so that others can order these parts too.

I don't have much in the way of photos of my limited progress so far but I plan on having at least the skirt and fender done by the end of the summer. If It wasn't raining I'd have started the skirt today. ;)

Cheers,
Mike

Ali & Son`s Troughton Era Dalek

Hi all
Just started building a classic mk 3 Troughton era Dalek.
Started last week and so far gathered materials for the appendages and have made the eyeball.http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

The eyeball is made from a hemisphere and the end of a baked bean can .
I have used P40 and P38 to create the slope.

So far I have gathered an eyeball and plunger but hope to do more work on the appendages over the weekend to get the plunger arm finished.

Any advice will be much appreciated, many thanks.http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Acrodrome's Cult Of Skaro

Dave here....from Wisconsin,

Several months back, my friend and cohort engineer suggested making 2 (two)
NSDs so that we may saunter through upcoming conventions AS DALEKS.

Then, the next door neighbor became enthralled, if not estatic, to build a Dalek....
then there were 3 (three) slated for construction.

As the Summer came about, and my commitments to other tasks finished, a fourth
person spiked interest.......
Alright - 4 Daleks......which would, in turn, compliment the Cult of Skaro.

Over the past 5 weeks, I've gathered practically anything un-anchored and within
size-dimensions - plus a thorough inspection of the local recycle center.
( MacGyyver would be proud of me )

During this time, I had also sifted through the plethora of Build Articles from this
forum - and still I'm utterly impressed at the resourcefulness....excellent.

I will start posting now, after these past 6 or 7 weeks, and will do my best to
keep a good pace.
Please accept my apologies for any irregular time-lines -- I am using every available
hour, other than half-time work, lavatories, and sleep to accumulate, hob-knob, trade,
beg, pilfer, if not qualifying as a Pac-Lid.

The first pics are the gathering of three Motor Scoot-a-bouts.
The Black (Red Seat) one is for Dalek Sec.....the Turquois one is Dalek Caan, the Blue one is Jast,
and the fourth isn't there yet...all are the 24 volt types.

I will be posting questions, if not directly PMing you folks with other queries.
Looking forward to Honoring you with Cult of Skaro.
Right -- better get this posted -- Dave
