Scouse Dave's Nsd - Skarr

Well after roughly 12 months work i am happy to say Skarr has finally emerged into the world and is almost ready to take it over,i would say he is 95% complete and looks good enough for me,i must offer my thanks and gratitude to all the builders who have given me their expert advice on many ocasions, and spured me on when i felt like throwing it all in,the skills and knowledge i have picked up since being a member of this forum is priceless and will not go to waste(Skarr 2) i thank John and the mods for being there when i needed help and look foreward to getting out on a trundle one day as he is mobile and rearing to go!!so here he is,,

And now for the full monty,

Couldn't find any kids to demonstrate the plunger suffocator device so i had to get in shot just this time
Just thought i may say that i think the paint looks ok as i tried to get the effect of an alien futuristic type of metal look i think it worked ok,anyway that's it,,,

Hello From Newcastle

Hello I'm Daemon, I'm 49 & have dreamed of my very own Dalek since the '60s. I just re-joined PDF with a renewed enthusiasm (obsession?) after a very close friend of mine who has no internet access mistakenly said to his 6 year old "How hard can building a Dalek be?" http://www.projectdalek.com/public/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif I had successfully talked myself out of building with what are probably a collection of arguments everyone on this website has heard or thought themselves. Storage, expense, then what do I do with it... etc. But then that b*****d had to plant the seed once more!

Previously I had pored over the plans, gone through processes in my mind, consulted a dear friends brother... an engineer who prior to obtaining his degree had won awards for "Excellence in Fibreglassing" from the local manufacturering community and explored sourcing various materials, wheelchair bits etc etc. So once again I find myself able to think of nothing else... for 24 hours now. Knowing the way my mind works, that will not stop.

I've decided to just give in & get on with it. Clearly, this isn't going to go away right? All I have to do now is decide between building the 2nd movie Black or an NSD. My friend Peter (Mr "How hard can it be") wants to build an NSD, so going that way would mean we could work together, but I would Like a 2nd movie black.

I notice that there is another member in Newcastle... thats excellent.

Mark's Kiwi Dalek

Many Many years ago when I was a boy and ever since then I have loved Dr Who, even more so the Daleks, when I was young, I dreamt about being and what it would be like as a Dalek. I also named my cat Dalek too.

Now after many years that dream is about to come true. It has always been hard for fans in New Zealand to get their hands on Dr Who items as most never come this way, I am sure that this build will have the same issues with parts etc. this diary will therefore not only serve as a record of what i have and in time completed, but also as help desk to where parts were acquired in New Zealand for other builders that maybe here and also for them to help me to locate items also.

So far I have downloaded all the plans, decided which Dalek is to be built and are awaiting the workshop manual to arrive.

I have built from scratch (including the circuit board) the Voice modulator off this site and it worked first go and sound great, who would have thought that I could have built that all myself? There is also a short clip on youtube for those that wish to see it. photos to be added soon

Dalek modulator

I have spent the last few days non-stop surfing the internet and phone books to locate the old 70s- 80s Land rover / mini indicator (beehive type)light covers for the dome, these are really hard to get here as many people want tem to rebuild their cars etc, But I have finally found a place that stocks them For $22.00 NZ

Strong Bros North Shore
50 Diana Drive , Glenfield Auckland

the problem so far that keeps me hunting is the 100mm (4'') hemispheres as no body in New Zealand make these, the only size balls here are 75 mm, I've tried plumbing shops etc but the smallest cistern floats they have are 150mm. i found a place in the USA that have the vending machine balls but only sell in 300+ bulk amounts. unless I find some cheaper item I am looking at having to mould these myself.

oh well thats it for now, off to lunch will post photos etc soon

DerbyDalek's NSD

Hi everyone

After a few weeks reading, research, and more reading, I am about to embark upon a NSD. With 2 small children and a full time job I have no illusions as to quite how long this will take, but the website is really inspirational. I am reasonably happy about working with MDF etc but have no experience with glass fibre so have decided to start with the dome and get the hard bit out of the way.

2 questions for you experienced builders;

1 - Given that I will be working in an uninsulated garage, do I need to crack on with the plaster and glass fibre work while it is still warm? does is make a difference?
2 - When making my former, should I allow half an inch or so extra height at the bottom to allow for trimming, or should I work to the base of the board?

thanks

Theleshollis' (Probably Destiny) Dalek

I have been firmly told that I can't make a Dalek until I get the loft converted and the leaning garage rebuilt. I e-mailed a builder friend the other day, and he's going to take a look next week, so, having started that, I've started the Dalek.

I had a large section of 18mm ply and some 3mm hardboard in the garage, so I got out my copy of the book that I've had for a few years, and put my circular saw and jigsaw through their paces.

You might be able to see the construction lines on the first picture, everything is measured from the centre line, up and down, and then at 90 degrees across.
As I'm using 18mm ply, I have decided to make the skirt and base in one piece. I have a transit van for work, so load space is not such an issue, and it can live in the garage. I intend to seal all the wooden parts really well.

The second picture shows the skirt top, cut out from the bottom. There will be enough space for the wheels (foot driving traditionalist), as I plan to add a fillet of ply inside the base to recess the wheels into.

The final pic is my way of keeping my wife happy as the offcut coincidentally fits the top of the washbasket that I've been meaning to replace for some time ;)

I hope the pics are okay for the forum.

I don't know at this stage, quite how the build will develop. I don't really have much confidence in my skill at making certain parts, or my patience, but the base, being a geometric shape with measurements available, fits my skill set. I'm quite keen to make the appendages too (must find my magic 8 ball).

It will probably end up as a Destiny Dalek, as I like Destiny. (I do, honest. First memorable Dalek story for me). I can also pass any dodgy bits as "authentic looking". But I'm quite keen to make my own idealised version.

Ian's Nsd

Hi all, I'm new to building a Dalek and this is my first attempt. I work at a timber yard and we're a bit quiet in the afternoons so I needed something to keep me occupied and what better than to build a dalek.

I've starting at the bottom and working my way up, so have begun work on the fender and the skirt

Ive cut out all the skirt panels. Most look like they'll fit all ok, although i think i might have to take another look at one of the panels (I've read that the first 3 panels all twist a bit at the top but my 3rd panels dont look like they'll fit properly to start with. I'll find out soon).

Last pic for today, I took this a few days ago and since then have begun to attach the fender panels. more pics coming soon.

Dalek Kahn's Nsd - Mack

And so it begins......

after a year of lurking, asking, borrowing, gathering and spending hours in B & Q i have finally decided to make a start. this is not going to be the fastest build ever as i work up to 13 hours a day, but come the weekend the tool box is opened and the shed is my haven.
This build is really being undertaken my me and my 13 year old son, but he gets bored easily and the lure of the simpsons is just to strong, so it's mainly going to be me!

The Dome.
like a lot of other builders we have decided to start with the dome. i managed to obtain a couple of packets of polystyrene tiles (50cm X 50cm) from a nice lady on freecycle.org. we cut them into circles reducing to follow the shape of the dome former.

Then i added a 1cm layer of plaster.

i then smoothed it down the best i could with the former, and was pretty pleased with the results.
this is a week later after the second layer of plaster.

Still a way to go, another layer of plaster to go on next week.

i have been plodding along with other tasks.....the ear cages were botched last week so i'll be redoing them at a later date. after struggling with what to use for the cun collars i was helped out by another builder with some resin casts (thanks ;) )

early stage looks like this...

still a bit of work to do, the rods still need trimming, and the collars are very brittle so i'm still looking for some steel or alu ones, if not i'll paint these chrome and be very careful with them...

more soon, i hope...

Atomicgraph's Dalek - Simon

well i've been in lurk space for a while now and i think its time to come into the light. everyones work is so impressive that i've held off and felt i have nothing to offer... well about my build i want to do a nsd so i came here because i didn't think it could be done then i saw the work you all have done so it gave me a glimmer of hope. i've never worked with fiber glass or moulds so i've got a lot of trial and error ahead of me.

i started on the dome first (way out of my league but i keep in mind trial and error)

i used my wife's exercise ball and splattered it with plaster...

i removed the ball and started drawing out the lines for the recesses

i'm thinking i can work with this... just level out the bottom and create that beveled edge at the bottom, seems easy enough.

well that didn't turn out so good :( its messurements are off and that bevel is a little wonky)
i better move on to something thats not so messy something like they eye here is my first attempt i used the magic 8 ball then went to the plumbing store i found this cupeling but it wasn't the same diameter of the 8 ball i still gave it a shot i made the little steps around the lens out of foam sheets i got at the craft store i used a straight edge to cut thin stripes and the layered them to make the steps

i stared at this for a months then decided to scrap it and start a new first i got a better fitting piece of pvc and used a rubber gasket to make the front of the eye then i used the same method to make the rings the profile looks a lot better so i'm contempt with it i then scrounged up some metal tubing and six tap lights i also found some wooden wheels at the craft store i got 2 and glued them together its not accurate but the diameter was the exact same as the 8 ball. so yesterday i put it all together and this is what i've got

i'm pretty pleased with the results and unfortunatly i'm in the middle of moving so anything major on this project is on hold thats part of the reason i jumped to the eye stalk. i'm thinking the next major part i'll make is the base and skirt and thanks to everyone for posting their builds and solutions i hope to be able to do the same

John's Genesis - Boris Mk Ii

Hi everyone,

Well, this weekend I have been out shopping and bought my first few parts.

I went round to visit my Mum yesterday, knowing that I would be going out to look for parts later in the day. By her front door, stuck in the garden was one of these solar powered garden lights. A quick look and a light bulb came on in my head! Out with the tape measure - 4" across, splits in two halves - both of which are different dimensioned spheres - EYEBALL! A quick discussion and it seems that particular light was problematic, if I could replace it, it was mine to take away :) I also salvaged one of my old basestation CB aerilas from her back garden which will serve for most of the appendage tubing.

A visit to the local 99pence store revealed plenty of these still for sale in the racks, so if anyone else is looking for cheap eyeballs. This is the place to look. 99p for a tin of Princes Ham to fit in the middle and I was sorted! Opposite was Wilkinsons, where I picked up a 5" plunger for £1.39. Cheap parts are always good :D

B&Q today yielded two 4.5" ballcocks which I hope will work for the arm and gun joints and a length of M5 threaded rod for assembling the eye.

The tin of ham is now empty and I have started removing the innards of the light assembly. Next job is some good old isopon filling and then to obtain some perspec for the five rings.

Will post more soon,

John
